Comox Full Day Private Fishing Charter

Looking for a proper fishing adventure on Vancouver Island's waters? This full-day private charter with Captn's Sportfishing puts you right in the heart of some of the Pacific Northwest's best salmon fishing grounds. Operating from January through April during Comox's prime winter fishing season, you'll have exclusive access to productive nearshore and offshore waters with a certified local guide who knows these waters like the back of his hand. Perfect for families, couples, or a small crew of fishing buddies, this charter accommodates up to four guests and focuses on salmon fishing while keeping an eye out for crab and shrimp opportunities when conditions line up just right.

What to Expect on the Water

Your day kicks off at Beaufort Avenue 1805 in Comox, where you'll meet your guide and get the rundown on the day's game plan. Winter fishing here means cooler temperatures but also means the salmon are active and feeding aggressively before their spawning runs. The beauty of a private charter is flexibility – your guide can adjust tactics, locations, and timing based on what the fish are doing and what your group wants to focus on. You'll cover both nearshore structure and deeper offshore waters, giving you the best shot at connecting with quality salmon. The boat comes fully rigged with everything you need, so just bring your valid fishing license, some snacks, and dress for the weather. Your guide provides complimentary water and hot drinks to keep everyone comfortable during the longer stretches between bites. Fish processing is available right at the dock, so you can head home with properly filleted fish ready for the freezer or dinner table.

Trolling Tactics & Gear Setup

This charter runs on proven downrigger techniques that consistently produce results in Comox waters. Your guide will set up multiple downriggers at different depths to cover the water column where salmon are feeding. You'll be pulling a mix of spoons, hoochies, and bait depending on what's working best that day. The winter months are prime time for using herring strips and whole anchovies, especially when the salmon are keyed in on natural baitfish. Downriggers let you get your gear down to the precise depth where fish are holding, whether that's 60 feet or 200 feet down. Your guide will constantly adjust depths, speeds, and lure selections based on what the fish finder is showing and how the salmon are responding. All rods, reels, tackle, and bait are included, and your guide will handle the technical stuff while coaching you through the fight once you hook up. The boat's setup allows everyone to fish comfortably without getting in each other's way, even when multiple fish hit at once.

Top Catches This Season

Chinook Salmon are the crown jewel of this charter and exactly what most anglers are hoping to tangle with. These king salmon show up in impressive numbers during the winter months, with fish ranging from 15 pounds up to genuine trophies pushing 40 pounds or more. Chinooks are powerful fighters that will test your stamina and your guide's boat handling skills. They're known for their deep runs and head-shaking jumps, especially the bigger fish that have been feeding heavily in the rich offshore waters. The best action typically happens from late morning through mid-afternoon when these salmon move up in the water column to feed. What makes Chinook so special is their incredible table fare – the meat is rich, oily, and perfect for grilling, smoking, or preparing as sashimi.

Coho Salmon bring a completely different energy to your fishing day with their acrobatic fighting style and aggressive strikes. These silver bullets typically run smaller than Chinooks, usually in the 8 to 15-pound range, but they make up for size with pure attitude. Coho are famous for their spectacular jumps and long runs that will have your drag screaming. During the winter months, they're often found in schools, so when you find one, there's usually more around. They hit lures hard and fast, often surprising anglers who aren't ready for their explosive strikes. Coho are also fantastic eating, with firm, flaky meat that's incredibly versatile in the kitchen. Your guide knows the specific structures and depth ranges where these salmon like to hunt, and the winter season offers some of the most consistent Coho action of the year.

Time to Book Your Spot

This top-rated Comox fishing charter delivers exactly what serious anglers are looking for – quality time on productive waters with a guide who's committed to putting you on fish. The January through April season offers some of the most reliable salmon fishing on Vancouver Island, with cooler crowds and hungry fish that haven't seen as much fishing pressure. Whether you're looking to introduce kids to salmon fishing, planning a couples getaway, or just want to get away from the crowds with your fishing buddies, this private charter gives you the personalized attention and local knowledge that makes the difference between a good day and a great day. Remember that deposits are non-refundable, so check the weather forecast and plan accordingly. With limited spots available during the prime winter season, this charter fills up with repeat customers and referrals who know what kind of fishing experience they'll get with Captn's Sportfishing.

Chinook Salmon

Kings are the heavyweights of our waters, running 12-39 inches and typically 7-15 pounds, though the bigger ones can hit 20-30 pounds. These silver-sided fighters with blue-green backs have black spots covering their head, back, and all fins - plus that telltale black mouth. During our winter season, they're holding in deeper water since they avoid bright light. We'll be downrigging and trolling with herring, spoons, and plugs to get down where they're feeding on sand lance and pilchards. What makes them special? That hard fight when hooked, plus some of the best table fare you'll find - beautiful reddish-pink meat. Local tip: early morning produces best, and don't be afraid to fish that herring right on bottom structure.

Chinook Salmon

Coho Salmon

Silver salmon are pure athletes - known for jumping up to 6 feet and putting on quite a show when hooked. Running 12-30 inches and 8-12 pounds, these acrobatic fighters have dark blue-green backs with silver sides and black spots on their upper tail. They're incredibly aggressive feeders during our winter months, chasing baitfish in both nearshore and offshore waters. Cohos love structure and will hold around debris or drop-offs where they can ambush prey like herring and squid. The fight is what keeps people coming back - they're absolute bulldogs that don't give up easy. Plus that bright orange-red meat makes for fantastic eating. My tip: when you hook one, keep steady pressure but let your drag work - they'll tire themselves out with those spectacular jumps if you don't force it.
